Those of you who have been coming to the PD Conference for a number of years may remember LeDerick Horne as one of our Keynote speakers from 2009, or as the narrator and poet from the video celebrating the 35th Anniversary of IDEA. LeDerick was classified as neurologically impaired in the third grade, and has since worked hard to become a successful spoken word poet, playwright, motivational speaker, entrepreneur, and advocate. LeDerick is also currently the board chair of Project Eye-to-Eye, a national nonprofit which provides mentoring programs for students with learning disabilities/ attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Recently LeDerick spoke with us and told us what he’s been up to over the last few years. In addition to his advocacy and education work, he and his wife have started a personal trainer business and he is currently working with OSEP-grantee Margo Izzo on a book tentatively titled “Dare to Dream: Empowering Students with Hidden Disabilities,” which will contain successful strategies, interventions and activities to empower youth in the classroom and the community. For more on hidden disabilities see: Fast Facts for Faculty, Teaching Students with Invisible Disabilities or the Federal Resource on the Civil Rights for Students with Invisible Disabilities.

At the conference

  • LeDerick will be joining Margo and Alexa Murray at the Poster Session, Tuesday, from 1:00-2:00 pm  at Table #7 for “Scaling-Up EnvisionIT: Integrating ELA Common Core Standards and Transition Skills”
  • We are happy to announce that there will be a Large Group Panel with student voices again. The panel is tentatively titled “Our Choices, Our Voices: Student Perspectives on Transition, College, and Disability” and planned for Tuesday morning.

Using the PD Conference to Network

Dr. Izzo is the Program Director for Special Education and Transition Services at The Ohio State University’s Nisonger Center on Disabilities  and a frequent presenter at the PD Conference.  LeDerick commented that although the two met briefly previously, it was at the PD Conference that they had the chance to speak further and really begin building a collaborative working relationship.

Conference staff are brainstorming new ways to make the conference more interactive this year, but we want to hear from you! Comment below or email us with ideas you have or suggestions of ways in which we can support your opportunities to network and make the most of your time at the conference.

Lederick is a wonderful speaker. I met him at The Ohio State University when we were both keynoting at the Multiple Perspectives Conference that OSU hosts each year. He is well worth hearing.

Re: Catching up with Lederick Horne

llederick has inspired so many students and young adults with disabilities. I have seen so many inner city students with hidden disabilities embrace their own challenges when LeDerick shares his story. I'm looking forward to working with LeDerick as we share how growing up with hidden disabilities has given us challenges and opportunities to make a difference.

Re: Catching up with Lederick Horne

It is exciting to see the youth leadership movement grow, as a result of great youth leaders such as Lederick! Through the IDEA Partnership's national community of practice on transition, there is an effort under way to connect grassroots youth development/youth leadership efforts across the country...led BY YOUTH FOR YOUTH. We are fortunate in PA to have a presentation of these youth leadership efforts at our transition conference next week.
